A Brief History of Taman Ujung
Taman Ujung Sukasada began construction in 1909 and was completed in 1921. The construction of the park was led by King Anak Agung Anglurah Ketut Karangasem with the assistance of a Dutch architect and a Chinese architect. In 1901, the site was known as Kolam Dirah, meaning a disposal pond for people who practiced black magic. Later, in 1909, Kolam Dirah began redevelopment for a different purpose.
The King of Karangasem enlisted the help of Dutch architect Van Den Hentz and Chinese architect Loto Ang to transform Kolam Dirah into a royal retreat. The construction was also supported by Balinese architects from the Karangasem Kingdom. The park features large ponds, bridges, and pavilions, all decorated with traditional Balinese statues and ornaments.
The construction of the park was completed in 1921, officially inaugurated in 1937, and used as a resting place for the royal family, as well as for receiving important guests and holding royal ceremonies. The park suffered severe damage due to the eruption of Mount Agung in 1963 and an earthquake in 1976. However, major restoration efforts were carried out by the government and local community to restore the park to its former glory. In 2000, the Karangasem regional government undertook another restoration after the site had long been neglected following the eruption of Mount Agung, while preserving the original design of Taman Ujung Sukasada.
